Working at the WDI

Below are descriptions and application materials for the various staff positions at the WDI.

Application Deadline: April 1st 2020

WDI Instructor


  • commitment to the mission of the WDI
  • teaching experience (including coaching)
  • comfortable with diverse debate formats and/or styles
  • experience working with diverse constituencies

Job Responsibilities

  • attendance at the WDI from August 8 – 12, 2020
  • create and teach sessions on relevant substantive content (coordinate with and mentor staff, use team teaching strategies)
  • develop and implement engaging strategies to teach debate skills
  • coordinate with staff and board on development of curriculum and teaching materials during the year in advance of WDI (teaching materials must be completed two months in advance)
  • productive collaboration with students, staff and board members
  • participate in community development exercises with students and staff while at WDI
  • willing and eager to work with diverse constituencies

All applications are due by April 1st, 2020.  Applicants will be notified around April 15th, 2020.  

The WDI will be held from August 8th – 12th 2020 at Camp Tyler in Whitehouse, Texas!

All travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the WDI reimbursement policy.

Resident Assistants

Preferred Qualifications/Experience for Resident Assistants

  • previous experience as a resident assistant in a dormitory environment
  • at least one (1) year of college
  • demonstrated leadership ability
  • CPR Training (or the willingness to complete CPR training by the time of the institute)
  • Lifeguard Training (or the willingness to complete lifeguard training by the time of the institute)

Job Responsibilities:

  • prepare room assignments prior to the institute
  • prepare dormitory, including setting up common spaces, snack spaces, etc. prior to the institute
  • supervise students at the airport and on the shuttle on arrival and departure days
  • supervise allocation of snacks throughout the institute
  • serve as “on call” staff for assigned morning, afternoon, evening and late night shifts
  • facilitate room check at curfew
  • availability to address any student needs that arise (illness, hygiene, social/emotional support)
  • assist in the facilitation of community development activities
  • attend and participate in staff training sessions held prior to the beginning of WDI
  • maintain regular and open lines of communication with the Assistant Director and Coordinators of the WDI
  • set a personal example by conducting yourself in accordance with all WDI guidelines, Federal and Local policies, rules, laws and statutes
  • regularly initiate contact with residents through individual and group settings; be approachable and available, especially during evening hours, lunch and dinner
  • develop and maintain a positive community atmosphere in the resident area through use of the individual and group meetings, and activities aimed at forming values and fostering communication, mutual respect, cooperation, and concern for all WDI community members
  • help oversee clean up of the dormitory facilities during the last day
